The Riksbank is proposed to receive a capital injection of SEK 25 billion

Under the new legislation that came into force on 1 January 2023, the Riksbank has submitted a request to the Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament, to restore the bank's equity to the statutory base level, which entails a capital injection of SEK 43.7 billion. It is now proposed that the Riksbank should receive a capital injection of SEK 25 billion. The Committee on Finance also proposes two announcements to the Government for amendments to the Sveriges Riksbank Act, partly with the aim of strengthening the Riksbank's possibilities for self-financing.

“The Riksbank's assessment is that equity should be restored to the statutory base level and that long-term self-financing must be secured. The current proposal for a capital injection of SEK 25 billion is a first step in line with our request. The Riksbank welcomes the fact that the Committee on Finance wishes for the Government to investigate, as a matter of urgency, amendments to the act that can contribute to strengthening our self-financing in the long term. As the Committee on Finance writes, it is essential that the Riksbank has financial independence with funding separate from the rest of the state. The Riksbank is now awaiting the Riksdag's decision and the further investigation into legislative amendments, before we return with more detailed comments,” says Governor Erik Thedéen.
